Heavy metals content in plastics and related consumer items is an important area of current chemical analysis. VHG has significant expertise in the determination of metals in a variety of plastics materials and the challenges posed my many polymer materials. We have developed reproducible methods for digesting ABS, PVC, polyethylene and other plastic materials. Some difficult to digest plastics require dry ashing and we have both the equipment and the experience with such methods. Elemental analysis is most commonly performed by ICP-OES, however we also utilize ICP-MS instrumentation. VHG is the preferred lab for Sony's Greenpeace program to determine cadmium, lead and mercury levels in packaging materials.
